Puerto Costa Maya is Mexico’s second most visited cruise port -after Cozumel-, featuring an amazing natural reserve and a rich cultural and historical legacy which offer visitors a chance to make a fascinating trip to the past in the Mexican Caribbean, where Mayan culture has a significant presence with a great number of archaeological sites.
Puerto Costa Maya is located a few hours drive south of Cancun and a few minutes away from Chetumal in the Riviera Maya. Its pier, consisting of a three-position docking head, facilitates the arrival of first class tourism. Puerto Costa Maya has experienced a growing popularity in the last few years and has gained itself a place among the best destinations of the world. It has become a must-see destination for cruise travelers who visit the Caribbean.

The recent development and modern port facilities of Costa Maya place it as a perfect port of call in the Riviera Maya.
When it comes to the activities available, the choices are endless: The port is surrounded by coral reefs. Although the predominant current flows from south to north, a geotextile net was used to protect the reefs located at the south part of the pier.
It is important to mention that the project adheres to the official regulations of land use and the adjacent marine zone.
Puerto Costa Maya is famous for its jungle, beaches, lagoons and Mayan sites. It is also known for being next to a coral formation called Banco Chinchorro, declared natural reserve as part of the world’s second largest coral reef barrier.

Its name comes fro the Mayan word “BAK HALAL”, which means “place surrounded by canes”
The main attraction of the lagoon – already a fascinating attraction itself- is the Cenote Azul (Blue water spring) of Bacalar, with a depth that remains unknown and that some people think may reach the 100 meters.
The Cenote Azul is separated from the lagoon by a few meters of land, from 80 to 100 meters.

Seven Colors Lagoon

The Seven Colors Lagoon is a wide extension of shallow waters and white powder sand. Its calm blue waves are barely perceptible and the presence of crystal formations produces a fascinating spectacle for the eye.

The fort of San Felipe
There was a time when this fort had a drawbridge and a moat which contained sharp stakes that served as a protection instead of water. Today, the moat is a beautiful garden with Mayan & Spanish designs where one can see machetes, rifles, cannonballs and rattlesnake tail tips which have a special meaning in Mayan religion.
