Bacalar is a really spectacular lagoon located at 38 km from Chetumal. Its name comes fro the Mayan word “BAK HALAL”, which means “place surrounded by canes”
The main attraction of the lagoon – already a fascinating attraction itself- is the Cenote Azul (Blue water spring) of Bacalar, with a depth that remains unknown and that some people think may reach the 100 meters.
The Cenote Azul is separated from the lagoon by a few meters of land, from 80 to 100 meters.
Seven Colors Lagoon
The Seven Colors Lagoon is a wide extension of shallow waters and white powder sand. Its calm blue waves are barely perceptible and the presence of crystal formations produces a fascinating spectacle for the eye.
The fort of San Felipe
There was a time when this fort had a drawbridge and a moat which contained sharp stakes that served as a protection instead of water. Today, the moat is a beautiful garden with Mayan & Spanish designs where one can see machetes, rifles, cannonballs and rattlesnake tail tips which have a special meaning in Mayan religion.
